Auguste-Nicolas Vaillant (2 July 1793 – 1 November 1858) was a French sailor who worked his way up through the ranks from common seaman to rear-admiral. In 1836–37 he captained a 21-month voyage round the globe in which the scientists made many useful botanical and zoological observations, later described in an 11-volume illustrated account.
Auguste Vaillant fut placé en nourrice par sa mère qui avait été abandonnée par le père, gendarme en Corse. Il eut une adolescence instable : il vécut seul à Paris à partir de l’âge de douze ans et entreprit un apprentissage de pâtissier, qu’il ne mena pas à son terme, avant d’exercer divers métiers.
Translator’s note: On December 9, 1893 Auguste Vaillant threw a bomb from the spectator’s gallery onto the floor of the Chamber of Deputies in protest against anti-anarchist laws passed by the deputies. No one was killed and the session was continued shortly after the explosion, but Vaillant was executed just the same in February 1894.
Auguste Vaillant was a French anarchist, most famous for his bomb attack on the French Chamber of Deputies on 9 December 1893. The government's reaction to this attack was the passing of the infamous repressive Lois scélérates. Vaillant threw the home-made device from the public gallery and was immediately arrested.
