George’s eldest half-brother, credited as serving as a role model, died of the disease in 1752, which subsequently laid the foundations for George to inherit Mount Vernon and become the Father of His Country.

Lawrence Washington was the son of Augustine Washington. He was the half-brother of George Washington. Upon his death, George Washington inherited Mount Vernon. This portrait has overpainting. Lawrence Washington was ill. Leaving his family behind—a wife and infant daughter—and willing to risk weeks on the open sea during hurricane season—he would try the air of Barbados, or perish. Thankfully, Lawrence did not have to travel alone. His half-brother George, then only 19 years old, accompanied him.

Lawrence Washington was the older half-brother of George Washington, being the oldest living child of Augustine Washington and his first wife Jane Butler. George Washington idolized his older brother from a young age. After losing his father at age eleven, young George looked to Lawrence as a father figure and brother.
