Gopal Krishna Gokhale was born on 9 May 1866 in the little village of Kotluk in the Ratnagiri district of, what was then, the Bombay Presidency. This was the village to which his mother Satyabhama belonged. Not far from Kotluk was Tamhanmala, the native village of his father Krishnarao Gokhale.
