James Hamilton, 2nd earl of Arran, who was heir presumptive to the throne after the accession of Mary Stuart in 1542 and was appointed her governor and tutor. On the outbreak of the Scottish Reformation he joined the Lords of the Congregation (1559) and became the acknowledged leader of the Protestant party.

Captain James Stewart, Earl of Arran (died 1595) was created Earl of Arran by the young King James VI, who wrested the title from James Hamilton, 3rd Earl of Arran. He rose to become Lord Chancellor of Scotland and was eventually murdered in 1595.
