He was likely a younger son of Somairle mac Gilla Brigte, Lord of Argyll (d. 1164) and his wife, Ragnhildr, daughter of Olafr Guorooarson, King of the Isles (d. 1153).

  5. When Ragnall Mac Somairle was born about 1148, in Morven, Argyll, Scotland, his father, Somerled MacGillebride King of the Isles, was 36 and his mother, Ragnhilda Olafsdottir, was 32. He married Fonia Moray about 1160, in Scotland. They were the parents of at least 9 sons and 6 daughters. He registered for military service in 1192.

Dubgall was a leading figure of Clann Somairle, and the eponymous ancestor of Clann Dubgaill. Dubgall's career is obscure, and little is certain of his life.
