Algirdas skatino Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės miestų plėtrą (vilniečius atleido nuo muitų), prekybą. Jo laikais gynybai buvo renkama sidabrinė . Algirdo politika stiprino Lietuvos Didžiąją Kunigaikštystę, telkė lietuvių ir slavų jėgas, dėl to buvo atremta labiausiai jo valdymo laikotarpiu suintensyvėjusi agresija iš vakarų bei Aukso ordos antpuoliai.
Algirdas ( 1296 m. vasario 11 d. – 1377 m. gegužės 24 d.) – Lietuvos didysis kunigaikštis ( 1345 - 1377 m.), Vitebsko kunigaikštis (apie 1318- 1345 ). Gedimino sūnus. Algirdas was one of the seven sons of the Grand Duke Gediminas. Before his death in 1341, Gediminas divided his domains which left the youngest son, Jaunutis, in possession of the capital Vilnius, with a nominal priority. With the aid of his brother, Kęstutis, Algirdas drove out the incapable Jaunutis and declared himself a Grand Prince in 1345.

2014 sculpture by Sergey Bondarenko. Algirdas was the son of Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania and his second wife Olga, the daughter of Prince Vsevolod of Smolensk. He was born in 1296 in Kernavė. In 1318 Algirdas married Maria, the daughter of Prince Yaroslav Vasilkovich of Vitebsk, who had no sons and received his new son-in-law in Vitebsk.
