23 de sept. de 2020 · Hippolyte Fizeau – Early Years. Hippolyte Fizeau was born in Paris as the eldest son of Béatrice and Louis Fizeau, who was professor of Pathology at the Paris Medical School. He attended the prestigious Collège Stanislas in Paris where he became a friend with one of his fellow students, Léon Foucault. In September 1839.

In 1848–49, Hippolyte Fizeau determined the speed of light using an intense light source at the bell tower of his father's holiday home in Suresnes, and a mirror 8,633 meters away on Montmartre. The light source was interrupted by a rotating cogwheel with 720 notches that could be rotated at a variable speed several times a second.

The eldest son of Louis Fizeau, a pathologist at the Paris Medical School, and Béatrice Fizeau, he entered his father’s school in about 1840, but dreadful migraines caused him to abandon medicine for physics.
