Kornberg was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 3, 1918, the youngest of Joseph and Lena Kornberg's three children. Emigrants from eastern Europe, the Kornbergs owned a small hardware and home furnishings store. Arthur was "an eager and able student" and was allowed to skip grades several times in primary school.
