  5. This work, ‘Harmony in Red: Lamplight’ was painted c.1884-86 and shows Beatrix Godwin, who was to marry Whistler in 1886. Here Whistler was interested in how the artificial lighting in his studio altered the appearance of colours – in this case the red of the cloak, hat and backdrop.

  6. She and Godwin attended a private viewing of the project on 16 February 1877, and Beatrix would later state that her love for Whistler dated to that time. Godwin asked Whistler to design his White House in Chelsea in 1877/78; he also commissioned Whistler to execute a portrait of Beatrix in 1884, but he died before Harmony in Red-Lamplight ( YMSM 253) was finished.
