Charlotte Brontë wurde als drittes Kind des irischen Pfarrers Patrick Brontë und seiner Frau Maria, geb. Branwell, geboren. Ihre beiden älteren Schwestern verstarben im Kindesalter an Tuberkulose.
Charlotte Brontë naît à Thornton où son père, Patrick Brontë, est pasteur. Sa mère meurt d'un cancer de l'estomac le 15 septembre 1821 [2].. En 1824, pour assurer leur éducation, les quatre filles aînées sont envoyées à l'école de Cowan Bridge [3], établissement recevant les enfants des membres du clergé peu fortuné, qui avait été recommandé à M.
