Starting in 1920, Hugh Ferriss outlines a true style of graphic representation of buildings, placing them in nocturnal contexts characterized by a dense surreal fog, where the manipulation of light and chiaroscuro highlight, in a grotesque way, the main features of the buildings.

Distinguished American architectural draughtsman and visionary, his images of skyscrapers in which ornament was suppressed were influential, and best seen in The Metropolis of Tomorrow (1929).
