Her parents, Frederick and Lydia, both taught music lessons at home, causing such a constant racket that Cora dubbed her house “The Musical Box", saying, “I was born to hear a great deal of noise, if not to make it".

Her father, Frederick Nicholas Crouch, was a songwriter of some fame, who abandoned the family and moved to the U.S.
