Thomas Mann (1875-1955) moved to Switzerland in 1933 shortly after the Nazis had come to power and begun a campaign of abuse against him. He was formally expatriated in 1936. In 1937 the University of Bonn deprived him of his honorary doctorate (restored in 1946), which aroused Mann to a famous and moving reply in which he epitomized the situation of the German writer in exile.

Paul Thomas Mann nació el 6 de junio del año 1875 en la población Lubeck (Alemania) en el seno de una familia dedicada al comercio. Cuando en el año 1891 falleció su padre, Thomas Johann Heinrich Mann, el futuro escritor se trasladó a Munich con su madre, la brasileña Julia Da Silva-Bruhns, y sus hermanos (entre los que se encontraba Heinrich, quien también se dedicó a la literatura).

Thomas Mann war der zweite Sohn des Kaufmanns und Lübecker Senators Thomas Johann Heinrich Mann. Er wurde am 11. Juni 1875 in der Marienkirche zu Lübeck evangelisch getauft. Seine in Brasilien geborene Mutter Julia (geborene da Silva-Bruhns) war mütterlicherseits indigener und portugiesischer Herkunft.
