The College of Science and Engineering is one of the three colleges of the University of Edinburgh. With over 2,000 staff and around 9,000 students, it is one of the largest science and engineering groupings in the UK. Prior to this, the University was governed by the Lord Provost, Magistrates, and town council of Edinburgh. The rector's place in the university was codified by statute of the Westminster Parliament, the Universities (Scotland) Act 1889, which provided for the election of a Rector at all universities then in existence in Scotland.

Created in 1998 this was one of the first of its kind in the world and has since provided a model for other medical schools to follow. In 2005 The University of Edinburgh was awarded a Queen's Anniversary Prize for EEMeC and The Virtual Hospital Online. In August 2017, EEMeC was retired in favour of LEARN, the University of Edinburgh's VLE.
