Zunächst war das Museum in einem Raum der Hofburg untergebracht, bis es 1907 aus Platzmangel in Räumlichkeiten am Kreuzgang verlegt wurde. Durch das rasche Anwachsen der Sammlung war man aber bald schon wieder mit Raumproblemen konfrontiert, sodass Erweiterungen des Gebäudes sowie Neuadaptierungen der Sammlung notwendig wurden.
