Roskilde Cathedral was constructed as a Romanesque structure in around 1170, but subsequent porches, chapels, and other structures were added, which each represented the architectural style of the time. Since the eleventh century, Denmark’s monarchs have been buried at Roskilde Cathedral.
The cathedral lost many of its Romanesque details in favour of the new incoming Gothic style from France. The cathedral became the first brick Gothic cathedral to be built in Europe and inspired the construction of many others like it. With the completion of Roskilde Cathedral around 1280, the town became the religious centre of Denmark.
The Roskilde Cathedral is a massive church built as a catholic cathedral in what was the Capital of Denmark then later in the 1500s re-engineered as a Lutheran house of worship and as such, the interior is rather stark. The reason to visit is the immense scale and the many former Danish monarchs interred there.

Built in the 12th and 13th centuries, this was Scandinavia's first Gothic cathedral to be built of brick and it encouraged the spread of this style throughout northern Europe. It has been the mausoleum of the Danish royal family since the 15th century. Porches and side chapels were added up to the end of the 19th century.
Tickets to the Cathedral. Roskilde Cathedral charges admission to the royal tombs, royal chapels, museum and gallery. All funds raised from ticket sales will help us invest back into the Cathedral, conservation, research projects, and a programme of events for all of our visitors. Adults : 70 DKK. Children : (0-17 years) free.
