Villars est nommé, pour remplacer Catinat jugé trop timoré, au commandement de l'armée chargée de cette mission. Forçant les passages du Rhin, Villars bat Louis de Bade à Friedlingen (1702). Ses soldats l'acclament maréchal de France sur le champ de bataille, ce que ratifie aussitôt Louis XIV (18 oct. 1702).
