Professor Carol E Harrison (Balliol 1990) is the co-author – with Professor Thomas J Brown of the University of South Carolina – of a new book, Zouave Theaters: Transnational Military Fashion and Performance, published by LSU Press in April 2024.

The oldest colleges are University College, Balliol, and Merton, established between 1249 and 1264, although there is some dispute over the exact order and precisely when each began teaching. The fourth oldest college is Exeter, founded in 1314, and the fifth is Oriel, founded in 1326.

The earliest of these colleges, University College, was founded in 1249. Balliol College was founded about 1263, and Merton College in 1264.

To the east of its historic premises in Broad Street, around the lawn of a cricket pitch, an ambitious masterplan has been carried out which comprises eight blocks of student accommodation and a small sports pavilion.

Savile was used to affirme' (fn. 1) had a humble beginning, and was an unimportant part of the University until the 19th century. In the following sketch an outline is given of its earlier constitutional development and small endowments.
