Hace 5 días · The Duke of Guise had been highly popular in France, and the Catholic League declared open war against King Henry III. The Sorbonne declared Henri deposed. Henri for his part now joined forces with his cousin, the Huguenot, Henry of Navarre , to war against the League.

Thirteen days later, a Huguenot nobleman named Poltrot de Méré, who had infiltrated the duke’s entourage as a spy, shot him in the back.
