During his father's and grandfather'sreigns as Counts, they had freed themselves of Flemish rule during the minority of Baldwin IV, Count of Flanders.

The first Flemish count of Boulogne was Adalolf, who succeeded his father Baudouin II Count of Flanders in Boulogne in 918 (see Part A below).
