19 de may. de 2024 · In 1765, until his death in 1767, the Marquess of Tavistock was in occupation. This was Francis, son of John, fourth Duke of Bedford, by his second wife, Gertrude, eldest daughter of John, first Earl Gower.
Hace 5 días · Tavistock Street, which took its name from the Russells' marquessate, was not made so narrow as originally intended, its width being 35 feet. At its eastern end it opened into Charles Street, and on its north side was a narrow passage 12 feet in breadth, called Tavistock Court, which led into the Piazza (see fig. 32 on page 208).
28 de may. de 2024 · Nothing is known for certain about the first Earl's use of the estate, however, and not long after he became the owner, he died at Russell Place in 1555 and was succeeded by his son, Francis. (fn. 10) During the lifetime of the second Earl the estate was let out to tenants.

He was a patrilineal descendant of Lord Burghley and the 1st Earl of Salisbury, chief ministers of Elizabeth I. The family owned vast rural estates in Hertfordshire and Dorset.
8 de may. de 2024 · Thomas Cromwell (1485-1540) rose up from lowly beginnings in Putney to become King Henry VIII’s right hand man. From the 1520s Cromwell, then a successful London businessman, leased a large house from the friary. It was three storeys high, had fourteen rooms and a garden.
