Lady Bessborough would later say that she “loved him to idolatry for seventeen years,” and she had four children by him.

The manor belonged, at a very early period, to the descendants of FitzPonson, who were called Ponsonby before the reign of Edward II.

A fine collection of antiques and pictures was formed here by the family, but most of it was sold by auction in 1801. Gifford House, at the head of Putney Park Lane, is the residence of Mr. Douglas Charrington.
