When Louis I married Ludmilla, the widow of Albert III, Count of Bogen , he adopted the coat of arms of the counts of Bogen together with their land, along the Danube between Regensburg and Deggendorf.

The transmission of the duchy of Holstein to the head of the (German-oriented) branch of the Danish royal family, the House of Augustenborg , was more controversial.
