Later, the adjoining garden we see today was designed under Ernst Ludwig, Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt. But for a long time, this park was inaccessible to the public.

They had two daughters and two sons, George (1892–1938), 2nd marquess, and Louis, afterward Earl Mountbatten of Burma. A grandson (through his daughter Princess Alice) is Prince Philip, duke of Edinburgh, husband of Queen Elizabeth II.
