It was interrupted in 1649 by the establishment of the Commonwealth but was restored in 1660. It ended in 1714, when the British crown passed to the house of Hanover.

When Scotland finally paid the ransom in 1424, James, aged 32, returned with his English bride, determined to assert his authority.
