In civvy street he tried his hand at maritime security, tourism, wrote a best-selling memoir, Sea Harrier Over the Falklands, before eventually settling in Grenada from where he continued to argue the case for naval air power with vigour.

Naval aviation was established by the British during that war, and the Fleet Air Arm was given control of all ship-borne aircraft in 1937.

It was commissioned in April 1914 under the control of the Admiralty, firstly through the Naval Airship Branch, then the Royal Naval Air Service when it formed on 1 July 1914.
