  5. 20 de may. de 2024 · At a 1778 social gathering including Sir Charles Bunbury and Edward Stanley, the 12th earl of Derby, the group conceived the idea of a race on the Downs for three-year-old fillies, which was subsequently called “the Oaks” after the name of Derbys nearby estate. Derbys horse Bridget won the first running of the Oaks in 1779.

  6. Hace 4 días · After the title of Earl of Derby had been taken from the Ferrars family, it was given, with that of Lancaster, to several of the blood-royal of the Plantagenets. Melbourne Castle was one of the seats of Edmund, Earl of Lancaster. King Henry VII. conferred the title of Earl of Derby on the Stanley family, in whom it has ever since continued.

Hace 1 día · His son Thomas Earl of Derby pledged this manor to the Crown for payment of his debts, and it was also security for sums due from his son Edward Earl of Derby, including a fine due for the occupation of the Isle of Man. Ferdinando his grandson, Earl of Derby and lord of the Isle of Man, died seised of the manor 16 April 1594, and his brother and heir male sold it to Richard Lee in 1596.
