The grand duchy originally formed from the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt in 1806 as the Grand Duchy of Hesse (German: Großherzogtum Hessen ).

20 de may. de 2024 · In 1884 he had married Princess Victoria of Hesse-Darmstadt, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. They had two daughters and two sons, George (1892–1938), 2nd marquess, and Louis, afterward Earl Mountbatten of Burma. A grandson (through his daughter Princess Alice) is Prince Philip, duke of Edinburgh, husband of Queen Elizabeth II.
