Im Jahre 1124 wird sie erstmals urkundlich genannt (auch Geburtsort Heilicas der Mutter Ottos von Wittelsbach). Sie wurde im 15. Jh. zur Festung ausgebaut und war bis 1698 Sitz des Landrichteramtes Waldeck-Kemnath.
