If you go look at county-level maps from 1896 and look at the western states (pretty much everything west of Missouri and Iowa except for California and Oregon) you will see that William Jennings Bryan absolutely dominated there, which is slightly confusing as those areas tend to be very Republican, and looking at elections from 1904, it is almost as Republican as it was Democrat.
