  3. The parliament was initially summoned by writs of 23 May 1461 to meet at Westminster on 6 July. Edward IV had taken the throne on 4 March, but it had been his decisive victory at Towton on Palm Sunday (29 March) that consolidated his position. Edward remained in the north in the aftermath of the battle and did not return to London until 12 June.
