He is often referred to in popular culture as the "King of the Wild Frontier". He represented Tennessee in the U.S. House of Representatives and served in the Texas Revolution .

He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a member of the Tennessee delegation three times and, after losing his final election, fought and died among the Texan defenders of the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, in 1836.
