29 de may. de 2024 · Michiel de Ruyter as Lieutenant-Admiral, Ferdinand Bol, 1667. In 1667 Ferdinand Bol painted several life-size portraits of Michiel de Ruyter. These were hung in the headquarters of all five Dutch admiralties. This painting went to Middelburg. De Ruyter’s hero status made him a powerful man.
5 de jun. de 2024 · Visitors are admiring Admiral de Ruyter’s imposing tomb monument. It occupies the place where the main altar once stood when the Nieuwe Kerk was still a Catholic church. The monumental marble tomb is a tribute to the naval hero, who died in 1667 off the coast of Sicily at the age of 69.

From 1661 to 1664, the Dutch sent Michiel de Ruyter and Cornelis Tromp on several expeditions to Algiers in an attempt to make the Algerians accept the free ships, free goods principle. Although the Algerians had accepted the principle in 1663, they reneged a year later.

Hace 1 día · In 1665, the fort was captured by Admiral Michiel de Ruyter of the Dutch West India Company as a retaliation for the English seizure of several Dutch forts by Admiral Holmes in 1664. Subsequently, it became part of the Dutch Gold Coast and remained under Dutch control until it was traded to the British in 1868.
