Much like York, Hacksaw has a similar structure where the action doesn't start until halfway through the film, and is centered around a single engagement. The love stories are very similar, both stories are about a conscientious objector and medal of honor winner, the main characters both have a tastefully subdued intellect, and the side characters are similarly comical yet tragic.
