His most successful works during that time were his original music for The Way We Were (1973) and his arrangement of ragtime music by early 20th-century composer-pianist Scott Joplin for The Sting (1973).

Before Alan Menken joined the group in 2020, Hamlisch had the most Oscars of any EGOT winner (three - all won in the same year).
