Codenamed Operation Neptune and often referred to as D-Day, it is the largest seaborne invasion in history.

It was assaulted on June 6, 1944 (D-Day of the invasion), by units of the U.S. 29th and 1st infantry divisions, many of whose soldiers were drowned while wading ashore or killed by German defenders.
