His father Ashutosh Sen was a professor of Chemistry at Dhaka (now in Bangladesh), and his mother Amita Sen was the daughter of Kshiti Mohan Sen, a famous Sanskrit scholar who taught at the Vishwa Bharti University at Shantiniketan founded by the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
