During Martin Luther’s absence from Wittenberg in 1521 to 1522, he published fifty-three theses against contemporary singing practices in church: De cantu gregoriano disputatio (Disputation on Gregorian chant).

Nonetheless, Luther himself railed against using dreams as a vehicle for revelation, castigating other reformers such as Thomas Müntzer (1489–1524) and Andreas Karlstadt (1486–1541) for doing so.

Luther's boldest assertion in the debate was that Matthew 16:18 does not confer on popes the exclusive right to interpret scripture, and that therefore neither popes nor church councils were infallible. Anlass ist der Jahrestag der Streitgespräche Luthers mit seinem früheren Kollegen Andreas Bodenstein, genannt Karlstadt.
