On 4 th August 1961, Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was the son of Ann Dunham, a white American from Kansas, and Barack Obama Sr., a Kenyan studying in the U.S. This unique multicultural background shaped his early years and played a significant role in his development .
Yesterday, sometime after 3 a.m. Honolulu time, Madelyn Payne Dunham died of cancer in the two-story, 10th-floor apartment on Beretania Street where she raised Obama. Obama's sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, was at their grandmother's side.
His father was a black exchange student from Kenya named Barack Obama Sr. He died in a motorcycle accident in Kenya in 1982. His mother was a white woman from Kansas named Ann Dunham, who was an anthropologist and died in 1995 from a uterine cancer.
