26 de may. de 2024 · Sir Anthony Ashley Cooper, son of the last, redeemed the manor from the Court of Wards in 1648. (fn. 13) He was created Baron Ashley in 1661 and earl of Shaftesbury in 1672 and died in 1683. (fn. 14) The manor descended with the earldom of Shaftesbury until the death of Anthony, the 5th earl, in 1811.

He held senior political office under both the Commonwealth of England and Charles II, serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1661 to 1672 and Lord Chancellor from 1672 to 1673.
