He held senior political office under both the Commonwealth of England and Charles II, serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1661 to 1672 and Lord Chancellor from 1672 to 1673.
29 de may. de 2024 · His widow, daughter, and son-in-law Anthony Ashley Cooper, later earl of Shaftesbury (d. 1683), remained there until 1641. The Comptons were at Canonbury in 1653 when the eldest son of James, earl of Northampton, was born there, and in 1662 when another son died there.

14 de may. de 2024 · Amsterdam was the final resting place of Anthony Ashley Cooper, the first Earl of Shaftesbury. Forced into exile due to his political beliefs, Shaftesbury sought refuge in the Dutch city. There, he spent his remaining days until his death in 1683.
