23 de may. de 2024 · Sir Anthony Ashley Cooper, later the first Earl of Shaftsbury, was a highly prominent politician (later he would found the Whig party). In American history he is probably best known as one of the Lords Proprietors of the Carolina colonies.

By 1682 Sir James Smith had sold his 18-hearth mansion and land there to Charles Morgan (d. 1682), grocer, and by 1700 it was the residence of Anthony Ashley Cooper, 3rd earl of Shaftesbury, who remained there until c. 1706.

13 de may. de 2024 · Throughout his life he was overshadowed by his brother Anthony Ashley Cooper. He was a student at Exeter College, Oxford in 1642. He joined the parliamentary army and was a captain by 1644 and major by 1646. He was commissioner for militia for Tower Hamlets from 1648 to 1649 and a J.P. for Middlesex from 1648 to July 1660.
