He was born on 22 May 1730, the son of Lionel Tollemache, 4th Earl of Dysart, and Grace Carteret. He was educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge. In 1751, he married Charlotte Spencer, the daughter of Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough.
