He was the last ruling duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, a state of the German Empire, from 30 July 1900 to 14 November 1918.

He was succeeded by George II, George III, George IV, William IV, and Victoria. It was succeeded by the house of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, which was renamed the house of Windsor in 1917.

On July 17, 1917, King George V issued a royal proclamation changing the name of his royal house from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor due to anti-German sentiment during World War I.
