As Camulodunum, the town of Colchester was the capital of the pre-Roman Belgic ruler Cunobelinus and is so named on his coins.

Hace 2 días · Colchester remained the largest and in many respects the principal town in Essex throughout the Middle Ages. Its castle was the seat of the sheriff, and contained the county gaol until the mid 17th century, but royal justices sat at Chelmsford in 1202-3, and from 1218 the justices in eyre sat there regularly.

Colchester lies on the river Colne, at the upper limit of navigation and the lowest crossing-point of the river, a position which attracted settlement from the late Iron Age. The stronghold of Cunobelin was succeeded by the Roman colonia whose walls were re-used by the Anglo-Saxon burh and the medieval town.
