Marriage and loss of status. When Prince Carl married Countess Elsa von Rosen (1904–1991), on 6 July 1937 at Kvillinge, Sweden, he had to relinquish his succession rights and his royal titles. She was the daughter of one Count von Rosen and ex-wife of another Count von Rosen.

Carl was the youngest son of Prince Carl senior and Ingeborg of Denmark. Prince Carl was Duke of Östergötland until 1937. After passing his school exams, he carried out his military training. In 1937, he relinquished his title and his succession rights when he married Countess Elsa von Rosen.
Countess Elsa-Marianne von Rosen (21 April 1924 – 7 September 2014) was a Swedish ballet dancer, choreographer and actress. She performed all over Scandinavia. She acted between 1939 and 1970. She appeared in the television series Tales of Hans Anderson.
