Edmund Earl of Cornwall founded a chantry chapel in Hambleden, which was newly built in 1296 without licence from the bishop. (fn. 243) On this account he suspended it and also because superstitious things were venerated, miracles said to be performed and pilgrimages made there under colour of devotion.

Afterwards Lady Eleanor, the king’s consort, acquired the same of Sir Roger, and on her death the king held it as her purchase.
