She was the daughter of Baron Aarnoud van Heemstra, a Dutch nobleman, jurist, and politician who served as mayor of Arnhem between 1910 and 1920, and Governor-General of Suriname from 1921 until 1928.

Her father, Anthony Ruston, only assumed to be noble. Since he believed to be a descendant of Duke James Hepburn, the third husband of Queen Maria Stuart, he changed his surname to Hepburn-Ruston.
