The Franz Joseph University was an important center of science and education in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. It was probably best known for its leading role in mathematics, earning the name "Göttingen of the Monarchy".
By decree of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph, dated March 31, 1875, the University of Chernivtsi was founded, including the Greek-Orthodox theological faculty – the only Orthodox faculty in the Austrian Empire.
One of the leading Ukrainian institutions for higher education, it was founded in 1875 as the Franz-Josephs-Universität Czernowitz when Chernivtsi (Czernowitz) was the capital of the Duchy of Bukovina, a Cisleithanian crown land of Austria-Hungary.
Following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the institution moved to Szeged in 1921 as Franz Joseph University and shortly afterwards its most notable academic, Albert Szent-Györgyi, started work. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 1937, for identifying vitamin C and extracting it from paprika.
Franz Joseph founded in 1872 the Franz Joseph University (Hungarian: Ferenc József Tudományegyetem, Romanian: Universitatea Francisc Iosif) in the city of Cluj-Napoca (at that time a part of Austria-Hungary under the name of Kolozsvár).
