It can trace its roots back to the Auxiliary Air Force (AAF) and RAF Special Reserve founded in 1924 to provide trained personnel to support the RAF wherever it is deployed.

King Charles has been a member of the RAF Association since 1971, having enlisted into the RAF that same year. He also previously took on the role of President of the RAF Association in 1986.
